July - September 2017


HerStory:

  • 9 students completed the course
  • All students stated in the final survey that they experienced a change in their viewpoint as a result of completing the course
  • An intern at TajRupt who was admitted to a university abroad with a full scholarship shared her struggle with gender inequality in family
  • A lawyer spoke about legal repercussions of domestic violence
  • A FLEX alumni and a graduate student at New York University spoke about breaking gender stereotypes in society
  • A clinical psychologist conducted a session on mental health
  • A nurse from a local hospital discussed reproductive health
  • A high school instructor of law spoke about prevention of early and forced marriages
 
  • Students volunteered at the local orphanage in Khujand
  • Students visited NGO "Women's Center Gulrukhsor" - a leading organization promoting gender equality in Tajikistan. They toured its shelter for victims of domestic abuse
  • CEO of a local tourism company shared her personal story of reaching success as a female entrepreneur
  • Students visited Atlasi Khujand LLC - Tajikistan's sole manufacturer of atlas and adras textiles. They toured the company's facilities and met with Deputy Director-General

Model United Nations:

  • 9 students completed the course
  • 8 out of 9 students stated in the final survey that they experienced a change in their viewpoint as a result of completing the course
  • All students stated in the final survey that they gained new knowledge from the course

The students completed two Model United Nations simulations. The first took place in August 2017 and simulated the United Nations Security Council with the topic of global cyberwarfare.

 

The second simulation took place in September 2017 on DISEC - the United Nations General Assembly's First Committee (Disarmament and International Security) - with the topic of peacekeeping in Ukraine.

 

 

 


State of Affairs:

  • 9 students completed the course
  • 5 out of 9 students stated in the final survey that they experienced a change in their viewpoint as a result of completing the course
  • All students stated in the final survey that they gained new knowledge from the course
  • The students completed weekly blog posts defending contrasting positions across different topics including equity vs. equality, influence of technology, conservatism vs. liberalism, income inequality, foreign aid, and unemployment
  • One student completed the course digitally by connecting over Skype from Dushanbe

Innovation Incubator:

  • The first cohort of Innovation Incubator included 5 students and ran for one month in an intensive daily schedule
  • The team completed a consulting project assessing Tajikistan's system of higher education and formulating a reform plan

A public presentation of the reform plan was delivered in August 2017 and was attended by over 90 participants.

 

 


English Language Instruction

  • 16 students completed two courses focused on improvement of English language skills: Upper-Intermediate and Intermediate levels
  • All students stated in the final survey that their English skills improved as a result of completing the courses  
  • All students in the Upper-Intermediate group expressed a desire to continue studying at the ERC in the activism courses upon passage of the final exam
  • 6 out of 7 students in the Intermediate group expressed a desire to continue studying at the ERC in Upper-Intermediate group upon passage of the final exam
